Radiohead 08.08.01 Trip Journal

Sunday, August 5th, 2001 - I leave my house in Kingston, Ohio for a two hour trip to my fiances house in the Dayton area. The drive was nice and I jammed to the Radiohead Nijmegan, Hollland show. I had to warm up my vocals so I could sing along at the concert. After arriving to Chrissie's house, we ate dinner, discussed the trip to Findlay and how nice it would be to see our friend Angie. We also couldn't believe we got Sec.22 Row L seats for $50 a piece.

Monday, August 6th, 2001 - Not much happened this day, just the usual things two people do when they are alone and plan on getting married someday. We spent half the day mapping our way to Cuyahoga Falls, but that wasn't to hard. Spent the whole day listening to Amnesiac everywhere we went. Couldn't sleep that night because "someone's" mother doesn't belive in AC unless it 100 degrees outside.

Tuesday, August 7th, 2001 - We left for Findlay at 5:00 and didn't arrive til close to 6:30 due to traffic and fucked up direction from MapQuest.com. We finally get to our friend Angie's apartment where we ordered pizza, jammed to Radiohead, and played The Simpon's Trivia Game til 1:00 a.m. I ended up having to buy Chrissie mass Benadryl due to her alergies acting up on her.

Wednesday, August 8th, 2001 - We left for Cuyahoga Falls around 1:00 p.m. Stopped in my stomping grounds of Bowling Green to get some lunch at Bob Evans ( you can't get enough "down on the farm" cooking before a long trip". At about 2:00 p.m. we finally got on the road to Cuyahoga Falls. First we encountered a person on the road with a psycho bear sticker in their car who made it a point to get our attention. You see, Angie's car is a Radiohead shrine, and it attracts some attention to it. Anyways, we got on the Ohio turnpike and encountered a couple of guys from Michigan who flashed us thier tickets to which we showed them ours and did some horn honking. Later down the road we come up on this girl with Radiohead bracelets honking and giving us the grin of a fan. Finally, we arrive to Cuyahoga Falls. Well, since we are nitwits and didn't reserve a hotel, we had to bust ass to find one. After about 30-40 minutes of searching, we came to a Comfort Inn where I ended up dumping $130 on a hotel room; it was the last one.

6:15 p.m. - The concert trip - We left our hotel to go to Blossum at about 6:15. The show wasn't suppoed to start til 8:00, so we had plenty of time. Well, a 10 mile drive ended up taking 1h 30m. Along the way we encountered two people with signs that proclaimed "Need Tickets for Radiohead". One guy I offered our spare ticket (Sec25, row O) to at $50, which was cheap for that close, but he was an ass and said it was to expensive. Up the road a ways, a guy bought the ticket off of me for $40 and we could hear him say "HOLY SHIT!" when he found out how close it was. We got parked at Blossum around 7:30 and took the 20 minute walk to the front gate. It was smoldering hot outside and my dumb ass didn't bring any water, so I was getting dehydrated pretty quick. The girls were fine, but you could tell they were hot. When we got near the front gate we heard Beta Band playing and wondered why they started early. A small panic broke out among some people, but was clamed as soon as we were told Kid Kuala had a set before Radiohead. After entering we immediately hit the t-shirt stand. Unfortunately, no dated shirts were to be found, but some cool European shirts were around. After 45 minutes in line, we went to munch some food. Mass amount of Pizza Hut cheese pizza and water were bought by us and was rapidly consumed. After finding out seats (myself and Chrissie were in Sec.22, Row L, seats 27,28, Angie Sec.23, row R, seat 25) we sat down to watch Kid Kuala, who was rather cool. This mad DJ mixed beats to Monty Python music, some rap, and Fitter Happier, which drew some applause.

9:00 p.m. - Radiohead - after waiting about 45 minutes for the stage crew to put the lights up and test everything, Radiohead finally took stage with The National Anthem, which rocked the hell out of the place. Thom was unshaven, in blue jeans and white shirt, rolling his head around and being a wild man. I can't remember the whole setlist, but here is what I do remember (in perticular order) - The National Anthem, Morning Bell, Knives Out, Karma Police, Street Spirit, Like Spinning Plates, Paranoid Android, Pyramid Song, No Surprises, You And Whose Army?, Dollars And Cents, Talk Show Host, Exit Music (For A Film), Packt Like Sardines In A Crushed Tin Box, My Iron Lung, Idioteque, Optimistic, I'm sure there was more, but my mind is running blank. Anyways, higlight were as follows:

Like Spinning Plates was played during the encore, Thom announced that we were playing name that tune and anyone who guessed the song before it was half way over was doing pretty good.

No Surprises - The band starts before Thom is done talking and he says "can you wait and start with me...... give me an E." Pretty damn funny.

Idioteque - We see Thom pounding on a tamborine and dancing around like a little monkey. The crowd went fucking nuts.

Pyramid Song - Thom is playing an upright piano with a camera mounted in it. You can see his face on the video monitors and he keeps sticking his tounge out at us.

You And Whose Army? - Same as Pyramid Song, except he turned towards the audience to have us sing.

In between two songs - Thom keeps going "bloop, bloop" which gets some laughs.

The end of the show - Radiohead is the first band I have EVER seen that waved goodbye to the audience and clapped for us. A very special moment.

Well, that's the end of the journal. Exciting show and everyone who was there had better enjoyed it. To the lamer who sat next to me and left after tossing his beer on my shoe -FUCK YOU!!!!! I FUCKING HATE YOU AND YOUR CHEAP ASS BEER!
